The Ondo State Police Command has thwarted a planned bomb attack in Akure, the state capital, leading to the arrest of six suspects and the recovery of materials believed to be components for improvised explosive devices.
The State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, disclosed this during a press briefing in Akure, describing the operation as a major success for the command.
According to him, the breakthrough followed credible intelligence on the activities of a suspected criminal syndicate operating across state lines. Acting on the information, police operatives were deployed to a targeted location, where the suspects were apprehended before carrying out the attack.
Those arrested were identified as Adekunle Prosper (56), Ojo Olumide (39), Tope Kolawole (40), Ahmed Salihu (40), Bolaji Adebowale (46), and Gbadebo Abidemi (43).
Items recovered from the suspects include bottles, a bag of sugar, mobile phones, cash, laptops, weapons, identity cards, and motorcycles. Preliminary findings suggest that some of the materials were intended for assembling explosive devices. Investigators also recovered a document outlining potential target locations, indicating a well-coordinated and premeditated plan.
The suspects were reportedly operating from a rented apartment in the Oke-Odu area of Akure. Lawal noted that the timely intervention by the police prevented possible loss of lives and property.
In a related development, the command also arrested 10 suspected cultists in Ondo Town during a separate operation led by the Special Anti-Cultism Squad. Among those apprehended was an alleged kingpin, Oluwatosin Temitope, popularly known as “T-Money,” who has been linked to a shooting incident at Oka Junction in March 2026.
Recovered items from the cult-related operation include a firearm, cutlasses, a battle axe, cult insignia, and charms.
The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, adding that all suspects remain in custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations. He also urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely information, while advising landlords to properly screen prospective tenants.
