The First Deputy President of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, yesterday, August 20, 2025, celebrated the promotion of his long-standing confidant, Alex Simon Bako, from Inspector of Police to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Prof. Adesugba, who described Bako as both a “brother and son,” convened a private gathering of family, friends, and colleagues to honor the officer, personally decorating him with his new rank in the company of Bako’s wife.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Adesugba drew from his own experience as a career uniformed officer, having served about 18 years in the Nigeria Customs Service. He noted that promotions in uniformed services are milestones of pride and fulfillment, acknowledging both the privilege and responsibility that come with advancement.
“As a former Customs Officer, I understand what it means to put on a uniform and to serve one’s country diligently. Every officer looks forward to moving ahead, and promotion is a privilege not to be taken for granted. I recall my own experience when promotions were delayed, and I had to watch juniors rise ahead of me. So, when a promotion comes at the right time, even backdated to preserve seniority, it is truly the grace of God,” he said.
Prof. Adesugba praised Bako’s qualities of hard work, intelligence, loyalty, and commitment, expressing confidence that he would excel in any posting within the Nigeria Police Force. “Alex is not just a colleague but a part of my family. I do not joke with him. I will continue to wish him well and support him as he progresses in his career,” he added.
In his response, ASP Bako expressed profound gratitude to Prof. Adesugba for his moral and financial support over the years, describing him as a second father. He noted that although his official decoration had taken place earlier, he delayed his personal celebration until Prof. Adesugba was available to honor him. “This moment means so much to me and my family because of the respect and love we have for Prof.,” he said.
Bako’s wife also offered a vote of thanks, appreciating Prof. Adesugba’s longstanding support and extending prayers for his continued love and support.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Director General of ACCI, Mr. Agabaidu Jideani; immediate past DG, Dr. Victoria Akai; her sister, Ms. Amina Akai; ACCI Vice President (ICT), Hajiya Lawunmi Labisi Ismail; Director of the Business Entrepreneurship Skills and Technology (BEST) Centre, Dr. Tinuke Temitope; and several others.
The ceremony, filled with joy, laughter, and refreshment, underscored Prof. Adesugba’s well-known commitment to celebrating and supporting the growth of younger professionals.
