Speaker Tajudeen Abbas on Thursday announced Hon. Fred Agbedi of Bayelsa State as the new Minority Leader of the 10th House of Representatives, following a tense standoff that threatened to halt the day’s plenary session.
The announcement came after opposition lawmakers, operating under the banner of the G-60 caucus, stormed the National Assembly and vowed to block proceedings unless their demands were met. Chants of “no announcement, no sitting” echoed through the lobby as the protesting members dug in their heels.
The caucus, led by Ikenga Imo-Ugochinyere, threw their support behind Agbedi, who represents the Sagbama-Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, for the Minority Leader position. They also backed Abdusammad Dasuki, representing the Kebbe-Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, as Deputy Minority Leader.
The lawmakers made clear that plenary business would remain suspended until the House leadership formally addressed the minority leadership question — a condition that was ultimately met with Speaker Abbas’ declaration.
