The two rival emirs in Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero, have suspended their planned Eid-el-Kabir durbar celebrations following growing tension and security concerns across the state.
The decision came after both camps earlier announced separate durbar activities for the Sallah festivities, a move that sparked fears among residents over possible clashes between supporters of the two traditional rulers.
Representatives of the emirs announced the suspension separately after security agencies reportedly advised against holding the events.
Speaking on behalf of Emir Sanusi, the Matawallen Kano, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim, said intelligence reports indicated that some individuals were planning to exploit the celebrations to cause unrest and disrupt peace in Kano.
He explained that the emirate council decided to suspend all durbar activities in order to prevent violence and ensure a peaceful Eid celebration in the state.
On the side of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, Alhaji Aminu Babba Dan’agundi, also confirmed that their camp had cancelled all planned durbar events.
According to him, the decision followed directives from the police and other security agencies aimed at maintaining law and order across Kano State.
Dan’agundi stated that they chose to comply with the security advice to avoid any situation that could trigger unrest, adding that they would continue to cooperate fully with security authorities.
Before the suspension, both emirs had already conducted separate Hawan Sallah processions on Wednesday using different routes and locations within Kano.
The development further heightened tension among residents as the remaining durbar activities were expected to take place along routes that could bring supporters of both camps into contact.
Many residents had expressed fears that the celebrations could lead to confrontation if allowed to proceed.
