The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on leaders and public office holders to uphold honesty, transparency, and accountability in the discharge of their duties, stressing that governance is a moral responsibility before both people and God.
Speaking at the opening of the second session of the 36th Synod of the Diocese of Lagos, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), held at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, the Governor described public office as a “sacred stewardship” that will ultimately be accounted for in both time and eternity. He was accompanied by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.
Sanwo-Olu noted that his administration has consistently embraced the principle of accountable governance, adding that leadership must be anchored on integrity to deliver meaningful reforms and public good.
The Governor said the synod theme, “The Doctrine of Salvation (Soteriology) and the Doctrine of End-Time (Eschatology): Their Relevance and Our Response to Them Today,” was highly relevant to Nigeria’s current realities, particularly amid economic uncertainties and social challenges.
He explained that salvation, according to Christian teaching, encourages believers to live responsibly and righteously, while the doctrine of end times reminds leaders and citizens alike of accountability before God.
“In my humble understanding, this is the foundation of every genuine reform, every honest budget, every transparent contract, and every life of public service,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu also appreciated the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Revd. Dr. Ifedola Okupevi, for his prayers and spiritual support, while commending the Church for its role in promoting moral values and nation-building under the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
He further highlighted key achievements of his administration under the THEMES Plus Agenda, which focuses on traffic management, health, education, technology, economy, entertainment, tourism, and governance, with additional emphasis on sustainability and social inclusion in Lagos.
The Governor also praised President Bola Tinubu for ongoing national reforms, urging continued prayers for leaders at all levels.
In his address, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos (Anglican Communion), Rt. Revd. Dr. Ifedola Okupevi, said salvation and eschatology remain central to Christian faith, describing them as both present assurance and future hope.
He commended the Lagos State Government for progress in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic development, while urging the Church to remain actively engaged in national issues.
Okupevi also encouraged members to participate responsibly in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, urging them to reject violence, vote buying, and ethnic division, while promoting peace and civic responsibility.
During the synod, gifts were presented to Governor Sanwo-Olu, his deputy Obafemi Hamzat, and the Special Adviser on Christian Matters, Very Revd. Bukola Adeleke, in appreciation of their presence and support for the Church.
