The Senate has urged the Federal Government to name an educational institution after the late Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in recognition of his contributions to education and national development.
The request followed the passage of a motion on Wednesday sponsored by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, who represents Ondo Central.
Leading the debate, Adegbonmire said Fasoranti’s background in education shaped his people-centred approach to governance and public service.
He recalled that the centenarian was a devoted follower of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and was associated with the Action Group in the First Republic and the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic.
According to the lawmaker, Fasoranti was also among Nigerians who opposed military rule and pushed for a return to democracy.
“Pa Fasoranti remained steadfast in the struggle for democracy. He was a man who spoke truth to power, honest and upright,” Adegbonmire said.
He added that the Afenifere leader worked with other regional groups, including Arewa and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, to build a better country.
“He believed in one united and prosperous Nigeria and promoted this all through his life,” the senator stated.
Adegbonmire also asked the Senate to send a delegation to Ondo State to condole with the government and people of the state, as well as the late elder statesman’s family.
Senator Jide Ipinsagba, who represents Ondo North, described Fasoranti as a strong supporter of education whose impact on the sector was significant. He also commended his efforts at promoting peace and harmony in Yorubaland and across Nigeria.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, put the prayers of the motion to a vote, and they were adopted.
Senators subsequently observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late Afenifere leader.
