Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the alleged use of the Department of State Services (DSS) to intimidate and silence critics.
Sowore’s criticism followed the arrest and arraignment of Mubarak Abdullahi, popularly known as Sardaunan Samari, over a document allegedly circulated online and falsely attributed to President Tinubu.
Abdullahi, who is reportedly a supporter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was arrested after sharing the document on his Facebook page with the caption, “ATIKU IS COMING.”
The document was purportedly a letter written by Tinubu to the President of the United States.
Following his arrest, the DSS filed three charges bordering on cybercrime and defamation against Abdullahi at the Federal High Court in Kaduna.
According to details of the case, Abdullahi admitted sharing the document and apologised. However, he was remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna.
Reacting to the development in a post on X, Sowore accused the Tinubu administration of deploying security agencies against Nigerians who express opposing views.
The activist questioned why a national security agency such as the DSS would be involved in the arrest of a citizen over a document shared on social media.
He also alleged that the government was afraid to face Nigerians and account for its performance, describing Abdullahi’s arrest as unfortunate.
Sowore further warned that those responsible for actions he considers oppressive would eventually be held accountable.
He wrote, “How low will you go, @OfficialAPCNg and the @officialABAT regime? How on earth do you reduce a national security agency like the @OfficialDSSNG to a mere vacuum cleaner, deployed to sweep up dissenting voices in your inordinate ambition to subdue every citizen simply because you are afraid to face the Nigerian people and account for your disastrous reign? Arresting a hapless citizen for posting a document online, sad!
“Shame on all of you! A day of reckoning is coming, when you too will be held accountable for your actions. That day is coming sooner than you think. Very soon!”
Sowore’s comments add to the ongoing political disagreements between opposition figures and the Tinubu administration over freedom of expression, the treatment of critics and the role of security agencies in handling alleged online offences.
