The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced an additional 600 megawatts to the national grid following the completion and commissioning of a major transmission project in Edo State.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulaziz, made this known during the official commissioning of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project.
He said the project represents a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and improve the evacuation of bulk electricity from the Ihovbor Transmission Substation to distribution load centres nationwide.
According to him, the initiative involved linking the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, resulting in the creation of two new transmission routes covering a total distance of about 14 kilometres.
Abdulaziz explained that the upgrade has enhanced the operational flexibility of the national grid and improved the stability of power delivery within the Benin corridor, particularly through stronger connectivity to key generation sources.
He noted that the project would enable more efficient evacuation of electricity from the Azura Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) facilities, thereby reducing transmission constraints and improving overall system reliability.
“The importance of this project cannot be overstated. It allows us to evacuate power more efficiently from the Azura Power Plant and the NDPHC plant, while also reducing transmission bottlenecks and improving grid stability,” he said.
He added that distribution companies across the country would now have better access to bulk electricity, ultimately improving supply to end users.
“With this development, we have added 600 megawatts to the national grid,” he stated.
Abdulaziz further explained that the improved grid configuration makes it possible for electricity generated from the Benin axis to be transmitted to any part of the country with greater ease.
He described the project as part of TCN’s broader commitment to strengthening transmission capacity, enhancing efficiency, and supporting innovation in the power sector.
He also noted that the upgrade reflects ongoing collaboration with stakeholders aimed at building a stronger and more reliable electricity transmission network for Nigeria.
According to him, the development will help reduce stranded generation and ensure that more available power is effectively evacuated to benefit consumers nationwide.
