Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.
The Nigerian team, comprising Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf, beat out competitors from Asia, Africa, the United States, China, and Canada in the competition, which ran from July 14 to 19.
Several African countries also had representatives at the event, including Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee confirmed the win in a post on its official Facebook page on Sunday, stating that Team Nigeria had secured the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category at the competition.
Before the contest, organisers had expressed confidence in the Nigerian team, describing them as brilliant, articulate, and exceptional, and predicting they would perform well on the global stage.
After the win, organisers described it as a major milestone reflecting the students’ determination, resilience, and commitment to academic excellence.
They explained that the students’ path to the international championship started at the Nigeria Spelling Bee, from where they qualified for the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Ar-Raheem International College also announced on Facebook that two of its students were part of the four-member Team Nigeria that won the gold medal at the international competition.
