President Bola Tinubu has declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military personnel, as he vowed to tackle killings, kidnappings, and other violent crimes nationwide.
The President made the announcement in a nationwide broadcast marking the 2026 Democracy Day and 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule.
Tinubu said this year’s celebration had been overshadowed by the abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states, but expressed hope for their safe return.
“Democracy without security is a mirage. That is why this administration declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers and thousands of military recruits,” he said.
He noted that the 2026 budget allocates ₦5.41 trillion to defence and security, the largest such allocation in the country’s history, describing it as part of efforts to protect lives and property.
“Our administration is ever ready to do much more to secure our people,” Tinubu added
