President Bola Tinubu on Thursday received outgoing ECOWAS Commission President, Dr Omar Touray, at the State House in Abuja.
Touray was accompanied to the Presidential Villa by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye.
The State House media office released photographs from the meeting, but details of the discussions between Tinubu and the Gambian diplomat remain undisclosed.
The visit comes weeks before Touray formally hands over leadership of the regional bloc’s executive arm.
Touray took office as ECOWAS Commission President on July 3, 2022, after The Gambia’s government unanimously nominated him and the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government endorsed his appointment for the 2022–2026 term.
He took over from Ivorian diplomat Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, who led the Commission from 2018 to 2022.
Touray’s tenure saw ECOWAS confront a string of political and security crises across West Africa, including military takeovers, regional instability, and efforts to deepen economic and diplomatic ties among member states.
Before his ECOWAS appointment, Touray built a long diplomatic career in The Gambia. He served as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations before becoming Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Yahya Jammeh.
He left that foreign affairs post in September 2009, then worked with the Islamic Development Bank before returning to diplomatic service and eventually rising to lead the ECOWAS Commission.
