President Bola Tinubu has dismissed Saidu Mohammed from his position as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), while the official was on an assignment in Berlin, Germany.
Mohammed was attending the Pipeline Technology Conference (PTC), which held in Berlin from April 27 to 30, 2026, as head of the NMDPRA delegation when news of his removal emerged.
Earlier on Wednesday, the agency had confirmed his participation in the international event in a post on đť•Ź, noting his leadership of the delegation at the conference.
However, about two hours later, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced that Tinubu had approved Mohammed’s removal and appointed Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive of the regulatory authority.
Onanuga stated that the President appreciated Mohammed for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours, adding that the change was part of efforts to strengthen leadership in key regulatory institutions to support energy security, sector reforms, and economic growth.
Mohammed’s exit comes months after he withdrew his acceptance of an appointment as an independent non-executive director at Seplat Energy in December 2025, shortly after his initial appointment to NMDPRA following the resignation of Farouk Ahmed.
The development also follows a pattern of leadership changes in key government agencies under the Tinubu administration, including the removal of the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in November 2025 while the official was on a foreign trip.
