Tinubu returns from four-week vacation, says he is “strong” and ready to work

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after about four weeks in Europe and says he is in good health and ready to resume work.

The President arrived in Lagos from Paris on Tuesday evening, where he spent the later part of his working vacation. Asked by journalists about concerns over his health, he dismissed them as the product of politics.

“Rumours will always emanate from politics. I am hale and strong. I am ready to work. The fact remains that I am here, healthy, sound and ready to go,” he said.

His long absence drew public and political debate. Opposition figures questioned how long he stayed abroad and why he did not personally attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The Presidency maintained that he stayed in touch with officials in Nigeria and continued to direct government affairs while away. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him at several official engagements, including the UN General Assembly.

While in France, Tinubu met President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré. The Presidency also tied his stay to engagements with investors and talks on major investment projects, including the proposed Gateway Deep Sea Port in Ogun State.

The President is expected to remain in Lagos for the 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations. He is scheduled to attend official engagements in the state, including events marking Nigeria’s independence on October 1, before returning to Abuja.
