United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has named Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, following the retirement of Tony Elumelu from the bank’s Board of Directors.
The bank disclosed this on Monday after a board meeting, noting that Elumelu’s exit takes effect on August 21, 2026, having completed the maximum 12-year tenure allowed for non-executive directors under Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rules.
Nnorom, who currently serves as a non-executive director on UBA’s board, will assume the chairmanship on the same date Elumelu officially retires.
In a statement following the meeting, the bank praised Elumelu’s tenure, describing his leadership as instrumental to UBA’s growth and strategic direction over the years.
“The Board places on record its profound appreciation to Elumelu for his visionary leadership and exceptional contribution to the strategic vision and institutional strength of the UBA Group,” the statement read.
UBA noted that under Elumelu’s chairmanship, the bank deepened its pan-African expansion, now operating in 20 African countries with a presence in four global financial centres. The lender said it currently serves more than 50 million customers across its network.
