A total of 180 Nigerians, among them 37 children and infants, have returned home from Libya under a voluntary return programme coordinated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Federal Government.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said the returnees arrived at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, at about 4:20 pm on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and shared on its X handle on Wednesday, the agency said the group travelled from Sebha, Libya, aboard an Air Buraq Airlines flight with registration number 5A-BAE.
According to NEMA, the returnees comprised 143 adults (75 men and 68 women), 26 children (12 boys and 14 girls) and 11 infants (three boys and eight girls).
The agency’s Lagos Operations Office received them in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.
NEMA said the Nigeria Immigration Service carried out biometric registration and documentation to confirm their identities and keep proper records for reintegration.
It added that the returnees were given food, drinking water and medical screening on arrival, while ambulances were on standby for those needing medical attention. Officials also provided luggage handling, logistical support and counselling.
The agency said reintegration assistance was also offered to help them resettle in their communities.
NEMA stated that government agencies and other partners worked together to ensure the returnees came back safely and were treated with dignity, noting that the exercise forms part of efforts to give immediate support to Nigerians returning from Libya as they begin to rebuild their lives at home.
