President Bola Tinubu has officially retained Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over the composition of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
The development followed the submission of the Tinubu-Shettima nomination forms to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the commission’s July 11, 2026 deadline for political parties to upload the names of their candidates.
Speaking in Abuja on Friday while receiving the completed nomination forms, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the 2027 election, insisting that the APC was not intimidated by opposition campaigns.
According to him, President Tinubu enters the race with the backing of more than 12 million APC members who voted for him during the party’s presidential primary process.
The nomination documents were submitted on behalf of the president by his Special Adviser on Political and Other Matters, Ibrahim Masari, during a ceremony attended by APC governors, members of the National Working Committee, federal lawmakers, cabinet members, governorship candidates and other party stakeholders.
Yilwatda described the event as the culmination of a democratic process that began with party primaries conducted across various elective positions, including state assemblies, the National Assembly, governorship seats and the presidency.
He argued that the administration’s programmes have expanded its support base beyond party members, citing beneficiaries of the student loan scheme, infrastructure projects across the six geopolitical zones and agricultural support initiatives in several states.
The APC chairman also urged governors, party leaders and supporters to actively publicise the achievements of the Tinubu administration, saying many government projects had been independently verified by citizens in different communities.
Expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, Yilwatda said APC supporters should remain confident, stressing that the ruling party expects to record one of its strongest electoral performances in 2027.
With the submission and upload of the Tinubu-Shettima ticket completed before the deadline, the APC has formally positioned President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima as its candidates for the next presidential election.
