Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that distributing food items to Nigerians will not secure electoral victory in 2027.
In a statement issued on Tuesday through his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said relief materials like rice, spaghetti, and noodles may ease hardship temporarily but cannot earn the trust needed to win elections.
He argued that electoral success depends on public confidence rather than short-term palliatives.
Atiku also accused the current administration of tightening its grip on power while shrinking the democratic space, despite increasing political dominance.
According to him, the alignment of several state governors with the ruling party reflects a deeper concern about opposition forces and voter sentiment.
He added that the government’s influence over key institutions suggests not strength, but growing anxiety about political competition and the electorate.
The former PDP candidate further alleged attempts to weaken opposition parties through internal crises and legal maneuvers, warning that such actions could threaten democratic integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
