Fresh political discussions have emerged over who will serve as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election after he secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
Unlike the intense APC primary contest in 2022, where Tinubu battled opposition from top party figures including former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the latest exercise was largely peaceful and favourable to the President.
Attention has now shifted to whether Tinubu will retain Vice President Kashim Shettima or opt for a different candidate ahead of the next general election.
Tinubu’s choice of Shettima in 2022 generated heated debate because both leaders are Muslims. Critics argued then that the Muslim-Muslim ticket failed to reflect Nigeria’s religious diversity and fuelled concerns about alleged religious imbalance.
However, political observers say the controversy surrounding the same-faith ticket has reduced significantly as the 2027 election approaches.
Some analysts believe the presence of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, a Christian and pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has helped calm criticisms linked to the issue.
Observers also argue that Shettima’s loyalty to Tinubu could play a major role in his chances of remaining on the ticket.
The Vice President has consistently defended the administration’s policies and avoided public disagreements with the President, earning a reputation as one of the most loyal deputies in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Political analysts say Shettima appears to understand Tinubu’s leadership style and has carefully avoided actions that could be viewed as disloyal.
His influence in Northern Nigeria is another factor believed to strengthen his position. Analysts warn that replacing him could create political complications and weaken support in a critical voting region.
Tinubu, known for his strategic political calculations, may decide against changing a running mate who remains loyal and commands strong support in the North.
Observers have also highlighted the close relationship between First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Hajia Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President.
Nana Shettima currently serves as the national vice-chairman of the Renewed Hope Initiative, a programme founded by the First Lady to support women and girls across the country. She also regularly represents Oluremi Tinubu at official engagements and outreach programmes.
Despite ongoing political calculations and speculations, many analysts believe it would be surprising if Tinubu eventually decides to drop Shettima before the 2027 presidential election. However, they maintain that politics remains unpredictable.
