A coalition of stakeholders in Surulere has rejected the bid by lawmaker Desmond Elliot to secure a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, under the banner of the Surulere Accountability Forum, made its position known on Wednesday in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Olanrewaju Badmus. It faulted Elliot’s performance over his three terms, citing poor legislative impact, weak policy direction, and an inability to address pressing local challenges.
According to the statement, various community leaders, youth organisations, small business owners, and civil society groups reviewed the lawmaker’s track record and concluded that it did not meet the expectations of the constituency. The group alleged that Elliot had delivered minimal constituency projects and failed to provide lasting solutions to issues such as deteriorating infrastructure, rising youth unemployment, and gaps in primary healthcare.
Badmus stressed that the rejection was not driven by personal grievances but by the need for accountable and progressive leadership. He argued that three terms in office should have resulted in visible and measurable development, adding that the constituency has instead experienced stagnation and a lack of innovative governance.
The forum also cautioned against attempts to misinterpret its stance, insisting that its position reflects the collective interest of residents seeking better representation. It called on political actors to present candidates with fresh ideas and renewed energy capable of moving Surulere forward.
However, Elliot continues to enjoy backing from some quarters, as a group of residents and APC supporters recently staged a rally urging party leaders to adopt him as the consensus candidate, citing his contributions to the constituency.
