The Lagos State Government has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional centres across the state as part of ongoing efforts to decongest facilities and improve the criminal justice system.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the release following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which reviewed the cases in line with due process.
The move is a continuation of similar interventions, with 91 inmates released in December 2025 to address overcrowding in custodial centres.
Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, said the inmates were freed under the governor’s constitutional powers as provided in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He noted that the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to justice, fairness, and the rule of law, adding that reducing congestion in correctional facilities would also enhance the efficiency of court proceedings.
Pedro disclosed that the government recently provided two coaster buses to the Nigeria Correctional Service to ensure the timely transportation of inmates to and from court.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to renovate and upgrade facilities within correctional centres to improve infrastructure and inmate welfare.
The attorney-general further urged the Federal Government to consider transferring at least one correctional facility in Lagos—especially one holding offenders convicted under state laws—to the state government to improve oversight, funding, transparency, and reduce overcrowding.
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to justice sector reforms that promote public safety, protect victims’ rights, support offender rehabilitation, and uphold fundamental human rights.
