Suspected terrorists have carried out a deadly attack on a military camp in Kemanji community, located in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, leaving three soldiers dead.
The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Monday, triggering fear among residents as intense gunfire rang out across the area.
According to sources who spoke with Vanguard, the attackers stormed the camp unexpectedly around 3:00 a.m., catching some of the soldiers unprepared.
A local resident, who requested anonymity, described the assault as swift and violent, noting that some soldiers were asleep when the gunmen struck.
“Some of the soldiers were asleep when the attackers invaded the camp around 3 a.m. They killed three of them before the remaining troops responded,” the source said.
The assailants were said to have engaged the soldiers in a prolonged gun battle, leading to casualties among the troops. While it is unclear if the attackers suffered losses, security forces reportedly launched a counter-attack to push them back.
The source added that Kemanji’s location may have made it vulnerable, describing it as a border community surrounded by dense forest, which could provide cover for armed groups.
The attack has heightened concerns about insecurity in Kwara’s border areas, where difficult terrain continues to pose challenges for security operations.
