Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and ex-presidential flagbearer of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Their move follows Obi’s recent resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where internal disputes had reportedly deepened in recent weeks.
Both politicians were formally received at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja by the NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside the party’s National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.
Leaders of the party described the development as a significant boost, noting that the entry of Obi and Kwankwaso reflects growing confidence in the NDC’s platform as opposition forces begin to reposition for the next general elections.
Insiders within the party indicated that the defections are part of wider political realignments currently unfolding across opposition groups, as efforts intensify to build a formidable coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
While neither Obi nor Kwankwaso has formally declared a presidential bid, analysts say their latest political alignment signals early strategic positioning ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive race.
