Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has walked away from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging that the same government-backed forces he claims wrecked his previous political home have now turned their sights on the ADC.
Obi broke the news via his verified X account on Sunday, delivering a pointed indictment of Nigeria’s political establishment alongside his resignation letter.
The former Anambra governor did not mince words. He alleged that state actors who he says deliberately destabilised the Labour Party from within — ultimately driving him out — are running the same playbook inside the ADC. The result, he said, has been a party consumed by factional warfare, cascading court cases, and mutual suspicion, with genuine governance concerns pushed to the margins.
Notably, Obi was careful to separate his frustrations from any personal falling-out with the party’s top brass. He stated clearly that his respect for ADC National Chairman David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar remains intact, and that neither man is the reason for his exit.
What is driving him out, he insisted, is a system — not personalities.
“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President,” Obi wrote. “I am desperate to see a society where people can live safely and with dignity.”
The former presidential candidate painted a grim picture of life for ordinary Nigerians — widespread insecurity, deepening poverty, and a climate of fear he described as increasingly normalised. He also acknowledged the quiet toll public life takes on those attempting to serve sincerely within a hostile and dysfunctional political environment.
Despite the resignation, Obi struck a defiant rather than defeated tone, insisting his belief in Nigeria’s potential remains unshaken. He maintained that the country is still capable of producing leadership rooted in competence, compassion, and justice — and that his pursuit of that vision continues, regardless of which party structure he operates from.
His next political move remains unannounced.
