Butchers in Dutse, Jigawa State, have warned that increasing transportation costs could lead to higher charges for animal slaughter and meat processing services during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The butchers, who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, said the situation could negatively affect operations at slaughter slabs and mobile meat processing services.
Checks at the Dutse abattoir revealed that the cost of slaughtering animals and processing meat has risen by nearly 200 per cent compared to the previous Eid season.
According to findings, slaughtering a ram now costs from ₦5,000 upward per head, while bulls attract charges starting from ₦20,000 depending on their size.
The cost of meat processing, including roasting and packaging, which previously stood at about ₦5,000 for goats and ₦10,000 for rams, is also expected to increase further.
Head Butcher at the abattoir, Ado Sarkin-Fawa, attributed the expected increase to the rising cost of transportation across neighbouring communities and markets.
He explained that transport fares to areas such as Sabuwar Kasuwa, Shuwarin and Wudil had increased significantly in recent months, forcing butchers and meat processors to spend more on logistics and daily operations.
Sarkin-Fawa added that operators offering home slaughter services might also raise their charges to offset transportation expenses.
Another butcher, Ahmad Mai-Nama, described the situation as economically challenging, noting that although there were no fixed prices for slaughter services, prevailing economic conditions would determine charges this year.
He also lamented the low level of business activities ahead of the festive period.
A dried meat processor, Babannan Abdullahi, projected higher processing fees due to the rising prices of petrol and other ingredients used in the business.
Similarly, Suya seller Abdullahi Awaisu said inflation had contributed to the increase in service charges, but expressed hope that economic conditions would improve and boost patronage during the Eid celebration.
