Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has defended the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Redeemed Christian Church of God leader Enoch Adeboye, urging Nigerians not to direct frustration over the country’s challenges at him.
Naija News reports that Ezekwesili made her position known in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where she said the cleric is not responsible for Nigeria’s socio-economic and political problems and should not be made the target of public anger.
She described Adeboye as a humble religious leader who has consistently promoted peace, prayer, and national unity, noting that his life has been devoted to spiritual service rather than governance or policy-making.
Ezekwesili also acknowledged growing public expectations that religious leaders should speak more forcefully against poor governance, but maintained that Adeboye has, over time, continued to pray and speak about the nation in his own way.
According to her, Nigeria’s worsening conditions—driven by years of corruption, insecurity, and unfulfilled promises—have deepened public frustration and weakened trust in political leaders, institutions, and other influential figures.
She warned that this widespread anger is increasingly being misdirected at individuals who are not responsible for governing the country, adding that attention should remain focused on addressing structural national problems.
In her words, she said Nigerians are exhausted by hardship and broken promises, noting that citizens now expect moral voices, including religious leaders, to push for accountability from those in power.
Ezekwesili stressed that the real issue remains governance failure, saying the country’s energy should be directed toward solving corruption, insecurity, and economic challenges rather than personal attacks on religious figures.
