There was a strong security presence around the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Thursday morning as authorities moved to tighten control ahead of a planned protest over the continued abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in different parts of the country.
Security operatives drawn from the army, police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Vigilante Group of Nigeria, and Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) were strategically deployed around key entry and exit points leading to the Villa.
Checkpoints and barricades were mounted on major access roads, restricting both vehicular and pedestrian movement. The measures led to limited access for workers and significant disruption within the area.
The restrictions also triggered heavy traffic congestion around major corridors including the Federal Secretariat, National Assembly, and Supreme Court axis, leaving many commuters stranded and forcing others to take alternative routes.
The planned demonstration was reportedly organised by human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, alongside the Take It Back Movement.
According to reports credited to Sahara Reporters, the protest was scheduled to begin at Eagle Square before proceeding toward the Presidential Villa.
Organisers said the demonstration was intended to demand the immediate release of abducted students, teachers, and other victims held by criminal groups across the country.
They also urged President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action to secure the release of the captives or consider resignation, citing what they described as the government’s failure to adequately protect lives and property.
The planned protest comes amid growing public anger over recurring kidnappings and attacks on educational institutions, with many Nigerians calling for stronger security measures and improved accountability from authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, no protest activity had yet been observed.
