The Chairman of the Accord Party in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, popularly known as Baba Isila, is currently in critical condition after he and some of his associates were attacked by suspected gunmen.
The incident occurred at about 9:50pm on Wednesday around the Community Bank axis of the MDS area in Osogbo.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the assailants trailed a blue Toyota Corolla conveying Ajibola and his companions before opening fire on the vehicle multiple times. One of the survivors said the attackers chased them and rained bullets on the car while they attempted to escape.
The victims reportedly managed to flee to the Dugbe Divisional Police Headquarters for safety as the attackers fled the scene.
Ajibola, who sustained severe gunshot injuries, was rushed to the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, where he was said to be in a life-threatening condition at the time of this report.
Reacting to the attack, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the incident and urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation.
He described the attack as unfortunate and insisted that the perpetrators must be identified and prosecuted, while also calling for a professional and unbiased investigation into what he suggested may have political undertones.
