A powerful rainstorm that swept through the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) on Friday caused extensive damage to two female hostels and several other facilities, leaving a number of students temporarily without accommodation.
The Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Christian Ezeibe, confirmed the incident on Saturday, explaining that the storm, accompanied by heavy rainfall, affected parts of the Awolowo and Isa Kaita female hostels. Sections of the buildings were damaged, disrupting the bed spaces of several students.
According to Ezeibe, the university management responded swiftly to the situation. He disclosed that Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya immediately directed that all students affected by the incident be relocated to alternative accommodation within the campus.
He noted that more than 20 students who submitted details of their affected bed spaces to the Department of Students Affairs had already been moved to other hostels to ensure their welfare and safety.
A visit to the affected hostels showed students relocating their personal belongings to the new accommodation provided by the university authorities.
The institution’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Egwu, also confirmed the extent of the damage in a statement. He said the rainstorm struck the campus on Friday afternoon, causing significant destruction to infrastructure across several locations.
Egwu revealed that the worst-hit areas were the Awolowo and Isa Kaita hostels, where strong winds tore off sections of the roofs. He added that the storm also uprooted trees and caused branches to fall across roads within the campus, temporarily disrupting movement in some areas.
Despite the severity of the storm, the university reported that no casualties or injuries were recorded.
The statement further noted that the Vice-Chancellor had expressed sympathy to students and staff affected by the disaster, assuring the university community that management remained committed to protecting their welfare, safety, and security.
Some of the affected students said the storm damaged personal belongings, including mattresses, clothing, books, and other valuables. However, they commended the university management, particularly the Vice-Chancellor and the Dean of Students Affairs, for providing immediate alternative accommodation and support.
The university has begun assessing the full extent of the damage while efforts are expected to commence to repair the affected facilities and restore normal conditions across the campus.
