Former Ogun State governorship aspirant and ex-senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent disrespect and unfair treatment by the party leadership.
In a resignation letter dated May 31, 2026, and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo said her decision followed months of dissatisfaction with how she was treated despite her loyalty and contributions to the party.
The former Commissioner for Health in Ogun State recalled that she joined the APC with a commitment to respect the party’s rules and decisions, including its consensus arrangement for selecting candidates. She noted that even when she was not fully involved in the process that produced the party’s governorship consensus candidate, she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity.
According to her, she faced several challenges during the governorship nomination process, including alleged acts of intimidation against her supporters. She claimed that despite being one of the leading contenders and investing significant effort in mobilising grassroots support across the state, she was sidelined when the consensus candidate was announced.
Obasanjo stated that no attempt was made to engage her before the announcement, contrary to the party’s guidelines on consensus candidacy, which she said require consultations among all aspirants before a final decision is reached.
She explained that although she immediately accepted the party’s decision and publicly backed the consensus candidate, she later became disappointed by the lack of communication and recognition from the party leadership.
The former senator revealed that after the consensus candidate met with her and her supporters, three requests were presented on behalf of her political team. While the candidate promised to respond within a week, she said no feedback had been received more than two months later.
Describing the experience as part of a broader pattern of neglect and rejection, Obasanjo said she felt unappreciated despite her efforts to strengthen the APC in Ogun Central and other parts of the state.
She concluded that remaining in a political platform where she felt unwanted was no longer acceptable, declaring her decision to leave the party.
Despite her grievances, Obasanjo expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as Chief Yemi Sanusi and Ogun Central APC Chairman Chief Soremi, whom she commended for treating her with respect during her time in the party.
Her resignation marks a significant political development in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections and adds to growing conversations about internal party dynamics within the APC.
