Former presidential candidate and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has said that the 2027 presidential election is likely to be a direct contest between President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Momodu described the anticipated race as a “battle of the Titans,” arguing that both Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar remain the strongest political forces heading into the election.
In a post shared on his X handle on Monday, he noted that while a “third force” may emerge as seen in 2023, it may not have sufficient strength to unseat the two leading contenders.
He said the ADC must rethink its political strategy and position itself as a bridge between Nigeria’s old and new political structures, as well as between veteran politicians and technocrats.
According to him, Nigeria needs urgent “reconciliation, reorientation and reconstruction,” warning that current political tensions could worsen if not addressed.
Momodu added that Nigeria had drifted away from the ideals of its founding leaders, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, and Obafemi Awolowo.
He criticised what he described as the rise of “politics of gangsterism,” calling for a return to issue-based politics rooted in ideas and ideology.
“The North and South must find a way to reunite and move away from ethnic and religious divisions,” he said, stressing that urgent action is needed to prevent further national decline.
