The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has raised the alarm over rising hatred and division in Nigeria, blaming poor leadership and politicians who exploit ethnic and religious differences for selfish gain.
Baba-Ahmed, a former aide to President Bola Tinubu, made this known on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
He said many political actors deliberately widen the gap between citizens in order to gain political advantage and hold on to power, noting that the resulting climate of distrust has eroded national unity and shifted attention away from the real problems facing the country.
According to him, issues such as insecurity, poverty, unemployment and poor public services affect all Nigerians regardless of their ethnicity, religion or region.
“Bandits, kidnappers and criminals do not ask victims about their tribes, language or religion before attacking them,” he said.
The PRP chairman maintained that Nigeria’s problems stem largely from failed leadership and weak institutions, not from differences among its people. He stressed that Nigerians have far more in common than what divides them and called for renewed commitment to national unity.
Baba-Ahmed urged leaders to abandon identity politics and instead focus on policies that genuinely improve the lives of ordinary citizens, adding that rebuilding public trust and strengthening institutions would help ease tensions and foster cohesion.
“Rebuilding trust in government and strengthening institutions will go a long way in reducing tensions and fostering national cohesion. We need leadership that unites Nigerians and addresses the issues that affect everyone, irrespective of where they come from,” he added.
