Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), was back in the dock on Tuesday as the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, resumed hearing in the ₦8.7 billion money laundering case filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Malami stands trial alongside his wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe, and son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, on a 16-count charge bordering on conspiracy, concealment, and laundering of proceeds of unlawful activities totalling ₦8,713,923,759.49 — in contravention of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Tuesday’s sitting before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik followed an earlier adjournment granted on May 22, 2026, when the case was stood down to June 23 for continuation of hearing.
However, proceedings were again disrupted after the defence, through the law firm of J.B. Daudu and Co., wrote to the Deputy Chief Registrar on May 20, 2026, seeking another adjournment.
Prosecution counsel, J.S. Okutepa (SAN), disclosed this development to the court, noting that while the prosecution had considered opposing the application, it opted not to, so as not to impede the trial.
Okutepa nonetheless urged the court to take cognisance of the growing number of adjournments already sought by the defendants since the trial commenced.
