Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called on Nigeria’s opposition political parties to unite behind Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the 2027 general election.
Yesufu made the appeal in a post shared on her 𝕏 account on Wednesday, arguing that rallying behind Obi should be seen as a strategic political decision rather than an act of surrender.
She maintained that success in the 2027 election would depend on the opposition’s ability to work together, not on which political camp has the most vocal supporters. According to her, Obi has the strongest electoral record among the opposition candidates and should serve as the rallying point.
The activist recalled that President Bola Tinubu secured victory in the 2023 presidential election with 36 per cent of the votes, while the combined opposition accounted for the remaining votes. She argued that the figures demonstrate the opposition has the numerical strength to win if it remains united.
Yesufu lamented the continued fragmentation among opposition parties, insisting that disunity remains their biggest obstacle rather than a lack of public support.
She stressed that supporting Obi would not require political parties to abandon their identities, structures or guiding principles, but would instead create a coordinated front capable of challenging the ruling party.
In her words, “Peter Obi is not the candidate of one camp. Unifying under him is not surrender. It is strategy. And unifying does not mean dissolving your party, your platform, or your principles.”
She also disclosed that a coordination platform already exists for party operatives, organisers, fundraisers and strategists across opposition parties, explaining that its purpose is to connect and strengthen their individual efforts rather than replace them.
Yesufu concluded by urging opposition stakeholders to unite around a common objective, insisting that only a coordinated approach can improve their chances of defeating the incumbent administration in the 2027 elections.
