The Federal Government began repairs on Kara Bridge’s failed expansion joint along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday, and the Federal Road Safety Corps has warned motorists to expect two weeks of heavy traffic.
The FRSC’s Lagos Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, announced the reconstruction in a statement, noting the work will run through the two-week period.
Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, said the repair is a critical safety intervention designed to prevent crashes and protect the bridge.
But the work comes at a cost. Hamzat said the four-lane carriageway will drop to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to give construction crews a safe working environment, a reduction that will slow traffic significantly, especially during peak hours.
To ease the pressure, Hamzat appealed to organisations and businesses along the corridor to let employees work from home during the repair period. He said the measure would cut the number of vehicles on the road and spare commuters long hours in traffic.
The FRSC also urged motorists to plan their trips ahead, avoid peak-period travel, and consider alternative routes such as the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway and the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
Hamzat asked drivers to remain patient, follow traffic officials’ instructions, and comply with all advisories issued along the corridor.
The Sector Commander drew a hard line on one-way driving. Motorists caught driving against traffic or violating the new traffic management measures will be arrested and sanctioned under the National Road Traffic Regulations, he said.
The FRSC said it has deployed personnel alongside the Federal Ministry of Works, the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, and other traffic and emergency agencies to manage the corridor during the repair window.
The agency described the disruption as a necessary trade-off for a safer, more durable Kara-Opic Bridge, and called on road users to cooperate with officials until the work wraps up.
