Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been found dead at his home in Battersea, South London, at the age of 41.
Emergency services were called to the academic’s residence on Friday afternoon after he was found unresponsive. Police said the death was unexpected but is not currently being treated as suspicious.
Arday’s death came just days after he resigned from his position as Professor of Sociology of Education at Cambridge amid intense scrutiny over allegations surrounding his academic work and claims about aspects of his personal achievements.
Arday attracted international attention in 2023 after becoming the youngest Black professor appointed by Cambridge University. His academic journey was particularly notable because of the challenges he faced during childhood. His university biography stated that he was diagnosed with global developmental delay, did not speak until he was 11 and only learned to read and write at 18.
He later pursued higher education, earned a PhD and established a successful career in academia.
In recent weeks, however, his reputation came under significant pressure following allegations that sections of his doctoral thesis, completed at Liverpool John Moores University, and some of his published research contained plagiarised material.
Questions were also raised about several extraordinary claims associated with his past, including reports that he had completed a 600-mile charity run in six days and raised more than £5 million for charitable causes.
Although Liverpool John Moores University reportedly cleared Arday of official wrongdoing, Cambridge subsequently announced an independent review of the circumstances surrounding his appointment and the credentials presented during the recruitment process.
Arday resigned from his Cambridge position on August 5, shortly after the university announced the review.
In his resignation letter to colleagues, Arday denied the plagiarism allegations but acknowledged errors in his work. He also said the intense media scrutiny and public criticism had placed an enormous strain on him, stating that he had reached the “limits of what any person should reasonably be expected to endure.”
The London Ambulance Service contacted police at about 3:12 p.m. on Friday after Arday was found unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed deep sadness over his death and extended condolences to Arday’s family, friends and colleagues.
Police said officers are supporting his family as preparations are made for a report to the coroner.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under review, although authorities have said there is currently no indication that it was suspicious.
