Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has alleged that soldiers are attempting to prevent him from entering Osun State as residents vote in Saturday’s governorship election.
Davido Raises Alarm On Social Media
The singer took to his verified X account early Saturday, saying he had been reliably informed that soldiers were working to stop him from accessing the state. He insisted this would not happen, maintaining that every Nigerian citizen has the right to freedom of movement at all times.
Davido, a nephew of incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, has been actively involved in his uncle’s re-election campaign under the Accord Party.
Police Had Earlier Announced Movement Restriction
His claim comes hours after the Nigeria Police Force announced a restriction of movement across Osun State, running from midnight on Friday, August 14, until 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, as part of security arrangements for the election. The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the measure was designed to guarantee the safety of lives and property during the poll, and urged the public to comply fully and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the state. Only persons and categories specifically exempted by the appropriate authorities would be permitted to move during the restriction period, the police said.
Thousands of police officers and other security agents have been deployed across Osun for the exercise, which pits Governor Adeleke against candidates including Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress.
Bashir Ahmad Pushes Back
Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad dismissed Davido’s claim as dramatic, arguing that the movement restriction had been widely announced by security operatives as a standard measure for elections nationwide, not one targeted at Osun specifically. He maintained that the right to freedom of movement does not override lawful security measures put in place to ensure a peaceful and credible election.
