Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, surprised guests at Lagos Fashion Week on Saturday when he joined the runway for designer Ugo Monye’s showcase.
The governor walked alongside professional models in one of Monye’s collections, drawing loud cheers from the audience.
Photos and videos from the event quickly spread on social media, showing Sanwo-Olu strutting down the runway in the designer’s outfit.
His appearance was seen as a show of the state government’s support for the creative industry, especially fashion, which plays a key role in Lagos’ cultural identity.
Explaining his decision afterwards on X, the governor described the moment as a break from his official duties.
“I stepped away from the usual business of governance to walk the runway for the incredibly talented Ugo Monye at Lagos Fashion Week. Lagos continues to grow as a home for fashion, creativity and culture, and I am always happy to support the people driving this growth,” he wrote.
Founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele, Lagos Fashion Week is an annual multi-day event that showcases Nigerian and African designers to buyers, the media and fashion enthusiasts.
