The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other digital tools to track fake news, verify online reports and identify those spreading misleading information about the agency.
The service said the move would also help tackle online scams and shield its reputation from false reports circulating on social media and other digital platforms.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, made this known at the 2026 Nigerian Council of the Institute of Public Relations (NECCIPR) Roundtable in Abuja.
Adeniyi was represented by the service’s spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, who delivered his message in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the Customs boss, the new approach will involve monitoring online information, establishing facts and responding to misleading claims capable of damaging the agency’s image.
He also stressed the need for effective communication so that Nigerians can understand the reasons behind the activities and decisions of Customs officers.
Adeniyi said AI has become a key part of the agency’s operations, particularly in risk management and communication.
“The role of AI cannot be overemphasised, especially within our operations. Over the years, AI has been deployed in our core operational duties as well as strategic communication,” he said.
He explained that Customs already uses AI-assisted systems to assess imported goods and classify them by risk level. The technology, he said, helps officers determine how much attention different consignments require and what action to take.
The Comptroller-General added that AI could also be used to monitor public reactions and gauge how Nigerians perceive the service’s activities.
He further disclosed that Customs is using digital platforms to verify information and strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies. According to him, the partnership will help identify and apprehend those responsible for spreading false or misleading information.
