The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has thwarted an attempt to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kurmawa.
A 40-year-old man was arrested on Sunday while trying to throw the substance into the facility, the command said.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Kano.
Kofarnassarawa said the suspect, a resident of Janguza Quarters in Kano, was apprehended around noon by officers of the Armed Squad Unit, who acted on vigilance and a swift response. He added that the operation was supervised by the Unit’s Commander, CSC Usman M. Sale.
According to the statement, the Controller of Corrections in Kano, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, praised the officers for their vigilance, professionalism and dedication to securing custodial facilities.
Yusuf-Lakpene restated the command’s zero-tolerance policy on the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional centres. He urged members of the public to stop introducing illicit substances and other banned materials into the facilities.
He said the suspect has been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and appropriate action.
The controller also reaffirmed the command’s resolve to strengthen security across its custodial centres, to provide a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
The incident is not the first of its kind. In August 2026, the Ogun State Command of the NCoS arrested a woman for allegedly trying to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta.
