The management of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has announced the indefinite closure of the facility following a credible security alert issued by the Nigeria Police Force.
The decision came after the Police Headquarters notified the stadium authorities of a potential security threat affecting the complex, prompting immediate action to safeguard lives and property.
According to a notice issued by the stadium management, the closure became effective on the night of Monday, August 3, 2026. All entry points into the stadium have been locked, and the facility will remain inaccessible until the police declare it safe for public use.
The management directed everyone who was inside the stadium at the time of the announcement to leave the premises peacefully, while security personnel were deployed to enforce the restriction and maintain law and order.
Individuals who had planned to use the stadium for sporting activities, training sessions, or other events have also been advised to stay away from the facility until further notice. Authorities urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies and avoid gathering around the stadium gates.
In its official statement, the management explained that the action followed intelligence received from the Police Headquarters regarding a credible security threat around the facility.
The notice read in part: “This is to inform all individuals currently using or planning to access the Abuja Stadium pitch that the Police Headquarters has reliably notified us of a credible security threat affecting the facility.
“Effective immediately, all entrances to the stadium will be closed and will remain shut until further directives are received from the Police Headquarters.
“No one will be allowed into the stadium once the closure takes effect. Everyone currently inside the premises is advised to vacate peacefully and promptly. Security personnel have been deployed to enforce this measure and ensure public safety.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm, comply with all directives issued by law enforcement agencies, and avoid loitering around the stadium gates. Further updates will be provided as soon as additional information is received from the Police Headquarters.”
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium is one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting facilities, hosting national and international sporting competitions, training programmes, and various public events throughout the year.
As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force has not disclosed the nature of the reported security threat, while the stadium will remain closed until further directives are issued by the authorities.
