Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of planning to freeze all bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The governor described the alleged move as unlawful and politically motivated, warning that it could cripple the activities of his administration just days before the election.
The allegation was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi.
According to the statement, Governor Adeleke made the claim during a meeting with government officials at the Government House in Osogbo on Tuesday.
Alimi alleged that the anti-graft agency was not only targeting the state’s official bank accounts but was also planning to freeze the personal accounts of key government officials.
The commissioner quoted the governor as describing the alleged plan as “the height of lawlessness,” insisting that such an action would have no legal justification.
Adeleke alleged that the purported move was designed to disrupt governance and paralyse government activities in the days leading up to the governorship election.
According to him, freezing the state’s accounts would prevent the government from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities and could negatively affect the welfare of residents.
The governor further maintained that the EFCC lacks the legal authority to freeze the accounts of a state government without due process.
“There is no legal basis or justification for any attempt to freeze the accounts of the Osun State Government. The anti-graft agency has no legal powers to take such action against a state government,” the statement quoted Adeleke as saying.
As of the time of filing the report, the EFCC had not officially responded to the allegations.
When contacted, the commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said he would provide a response later but had yet to do so.
Governor Adeleke is seeking re-election for another four-year term under the platform of the Accord Party, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) is aiming to reclaim Osun State after spending four years in the opposition.
Political activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election have intensified, with reports of violent clashes between supporters of rival political parties in several parts of the state.
Earlier this week, while addressing supporters during a campaign rally in Olorunda Local Government Area, Adeleke appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the growing political tension and violence across Osun State.
The governor warned against allowing the situation to deteriorate into a crisis similar to the political unrest experienced in parts of the South-West in 1983.
He also argued that the Accord Party’s endorsement of President Tinubu’s second-term ambition should encourage the Federal Government to ensure a peaceful and credible governorship election in the state.
According to Adeleke, the people of Osun deserve a peaceful atmosphere that guarantees a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.
“All we are asking for is simply a free and fair election,” the governor stated.
