Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has announced plans to convene a security summit for traditional rulers across the South-West following a major endorsement of the Iru Ekun Security Network by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
The monarch pledged his support for the community-based security initiative with a donation of ₦100 million and a brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicle, describing the protection of lives and property as a shared responsibility.
Speaking through a statement issued by his media office on Wednesday, Igboho revealed that the proposed summit would be hosted by the Ooni in Ile-Ife and would bring together traditional rulers from across the South-West to deliberate on regional security, unity, and other issues aimed at promoting the collective interests of Yorubaland.
Igboho expressed gratitude to the Ooni for the financial and logistical support, describing the gesture as a strong vote of confidence in the newly launched Iru Ekun Security Network.
According to him, the support would strengthen the resolve of the security outfit to improve safety in both urban and rural communities across the region.
“This immense support from the foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland will encourage us to remain steadfast in our mission of creating a safer environment for people in our communities,” he said.
He acknowledged that the task of tackling insecurity remains challenging but stressed that the security network would continue to work alongside the Nigeria Police Force, the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to combat crime.
Igboho added that the outfit was committed to ending the insecurity that has forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands due to attacks, kidnappings, and other violent crimes.
“The era of farmers deserting their farms because of killings, kidnappings, and assaults must come to an end. We are determined to sustain our zero-tolerance approach to criminality within the confines of the law,” he stated.
The Yoruba activist further disclosed that the Iru Ekun Security Network has continued to receive support from notable Nigerians, including members of the elite, judges, technocrats, and other prominent personalities who share its vision of a safer and more peaceful society.
He noted that beyond the Ooni’s donation, many influential individuals have pledged support for the initiative because of its commitment to community safety and social justice.
On the planned security summit, Igboho said the gathering would provide a platform for traditional rulers to discuss practical strategies for improving security, strengthening regional unity, and protecting the interests of the Yoruba people.
Meanwhile, the Ooni of Ife commended Igboho for establishing the Iru Ekun Security Network, describing him as a courageous son of Oduduwa whose commitment to peace and security deserves encouragement.
Receiving the activist at his palace in Ile-Ife, Oba Ogunwusi said community security should not be viewed through political, religious, or ideological lenses but as a collective responsibility.
“I commend Chief Sunday Igboho for taking this bold initiative to strengthen community security. Every genuine effort aimed at protecting lives and maintaining peace deserves support,” the monarch said.
The Ooni also called on Yoruba sons and daughters, traditional rulers, community leaders, professionals, business executives, traditionalists, and stakeholders both within Nigeria and in the diaspora to support the Iru Ekun Security Network.
According to him, broad-based collaboration is essential to ensuring lasting peace, security, and development across the South-West.
