Veteran Nollywood actress Genevieve Nnaji has revealed that becoming an actress was never part of her original dream, despite starting her television journey at a very young age.
Speaking during a conversation with Bollywood actress Tara Sutaria at Cannes 2026, the award-winning filmmaker reflected on her career, creativity, and the changing role of women in the film industry.
According to Genevieve, she first appeared on television at the age of eight and believes acting found her rather than the other way around.
She said acting was never a childhood ambition, adding that although she always knew she belonged in the creative industry, fashion was actually her first passion.
The actress also addressed common stereotypes about women, noting that women are often labelled “difficult” simply for being confident and going after what they want on their own terms.
Speaking further, she dismissed the belief that every actor is naturally outgoing, explaining that some actors are introverts who enjoy quiet lifestyles away from the spotlight.
Genevieve also highlighted the increasing opportunities available to female filmmakers, saying more women now have the platform to tell stories from their own perspectives after years of being overlooked.
She added that the industry is only beginning to explore women-centered storytelling, with many talented female filmmakers continuing to emerge across the world.
