Fast-rising Nollywood actress Joan Johnson has spoken against body shaming in the entertainment industry, revealing the harsh criticism she faced at the beginning of her acting career.
The award-winning actress said many celebrities, especially women in Nollywood, are often subjected to intense scrutiny over their appearance, body size, skin colour, and other physical features.
Body shaming involves mocking or humiliating people because of their physical appearance, including their weight, body shape, complexion, or perceived imperfections.
Speaking through her social media platforms, Johnson disclosed that she was once told she could never succeed in the movie industry unless she underwent cosmetic surgery.
Despite the discouraging comments, the actress said she remained confident in herself and believed her talent would eventually open doors for her.
“I am very confident that nothing will make me feel inferior or pressure me to change my body,” she stated.
Johnson noted that her experience reflects the growing pressure many upcoming actresses face in the entertainment industry, where appearance is sometimes valued more than talent and creativity.
She added that more women in Nollywood are beginning to challenge unrealistic beauty standards and speak openly against body shaming.
The actress had earlier spoken about her personal life, saying she sometimes feels unappreciated by men and is uncertain about marriage.
Meanwhile, body shaming, particularly against plus-size individuals, has continued to rise in Nigerian society, largely fueled by social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, X, and WhatsApp, where many users disguise hurtful comments as “advice” or criticism.
