Vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has said he oversaw the Lekki Deep Seaport project from start to finish, accusing President Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of taking credit for it.
Amaechi made the remarks on Thursday at an ADC stakeholders’ meeting in Edo State. He was speaking on the party’s plan to develop the proposed Gelegele Seaport to the standard of the Lekki facility if it wins power.
The former Minister of Transportation said several deep seaports, including the Lekki project, were approved under former President Muhammadu Buhari. He noted that the idea predated Buhari’s administration, but his position as minister put him in charge of seeing it through.
“I built Lekki Deep Seaport from scratch to finish. I finished it completely, but I had resigned to contest for the office of the president, that’s why Sanwo-Olu got Buhari to come and commission it,” he said.
He alleged that at the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu and others, including Tinubu, presented themselves as the builders of the project. “None of them visited it from scratch,” Amaechi said.
He added that while Buhari approved the construction, the concept was originally Olusegun Obasanjo’s idea, “even though it was built by Buhari.”
