The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for 25 days to carry out repairs and resurfacing.
The closure is proposed to begin on October 20, 2026, although the agency said the date is yet to be finally confirmed.
FAAN made the announcement in a statement on Thursday through its official X account. The statement was signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.
According to the authority, parts of the runway have deteriorated, with potholes and widespread cracks on the surface. It added that recent heavy rainfall has worsened the damage.
FAAN said the rehabilitation will involve repairing the affected sections, treating the cracks and resurfacing areas that need attention. The work, it said, is meant to improve the runway’s condition and ensure safer operations.
The repairs are also expected to prepare the airport for increased passenger traffic and flight activity during the Christmas season, when more people travel to and from the South-East.
Beyond the repairs, the project will include extending the runway so the airport can handle wide-body aircraft. FAAN said the extension will boost the airport’s capacity as air traffic to the region continues to grow, while also improving passenger comfort and convenience.
The authority advised passengers planning to use the airport during the closure period to stay in touch with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative travel arrangements.
