Residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have expressed renewed fear following reports that suspected Boko Haram insurgents have issued a one-week ultimatum concerning 176 women and children held in captivity.
According to community sources, the armed group threatened to kill some of the abductees or force others into marriage if their demands are not met within the stated period.
The warning was reportedly passed through one of the victims, who was allowed to speak briefly with her family after a Jumu’ah prayer session held under captivity. The abductee confirmed that the victims were still alive but said the captors were angered by what they described as the government’s slow response.
Residents said the insurgents accused authorities of neglecting the situation despite the resources allegedly being spent on sustaining the captives.
It was further gathered that the group warned that if no agreement is reached within one week, they would begin executing some of the hostages while forcing others into marriage.
The ultimatum has intensified anxiety among families of the abducted persons, many of whom say they are now living in fear as the deadline approaches.
The development comes after an earlier video surfaced showing the victims—mostly women and children—appearing weak as they pleaded for rescue. In the video, an armed militant claimed responsibility for the abduction and alleged that the victims had been indoctrinated.
Sources also revealed that the abductors initially demanded ₦20 million per victim, but negotiations with authorities have reportedly stalled.
Relatives of the victims have appealed to the government to urgently intervene and secure the release of their loved ones, warning that any delay could lead to a worsening situation.
Community members say the atmosphere remains tense, with growing calls for swift action to prevent further tragedy.
