Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has publicly endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was made on Monday during a meeting at Lagos House, Marina, signaling increasing momentum behind Hamzat’s potential candidacy ahead of the polls.
In recent weeks, Hamzat has reportedly gained the support of several influential political and community leaders across the state through a series of consultations.
Notable figures said to be backing his ambition include the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. Others are Senator Tokunbo Abiru and former Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, alongside key party stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Obasa is said to have stepped back from his earlier governorship ambition and is now preparing to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker had previously intensified political activities across Lagos by reviving the Mandate Group, a political structure linked to President Bola Tinubu. However, following consultations between Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Hamzat is believed to have emerged as the preferred candidate for the governorship race.
