Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has said his past criticisms of the President should no longer take centre stage in public discussion, insisting the remarks were “baseless” given current realities, though not untrue at the time.
Bwala made the comments on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he clashed with anchor Seun Okinbaloye over statements he made about Tinubu before joining the administration.
The presidential aide expressed frustration that the host kept returning to his earlier remarks instead of focusing on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
“The first person that started asking me this question was you, and you have done that more than five times. Are you not tired?” Bwala said. “They are completely inconsequential to what is happening.”
He insisted the discussion should instead focus on governance matters — the economy, education, security, and a letter reportedly sent by US President Donald Trump praising Tinubu’s security record.
“We have taken almost 10 minutes on this,” he said. “Nigerian people want to hear tonight what is happening to their lives. They want to know what is happening with their economy, with their education, and most importantly, with security.”
Bwala claimed the administration has recorded significant achievements, especially in strengthening cooperation among security agencies.
“We have made substantial progress. It is the first time in Nigeria’s history that the leadership of President Bola Tinubu has brought about very strong collaboration,” he said.
Pressed on whether calling his earlier comments “baseless” amounted to admitting they were lies, Bwala pushed back, drawing a clear line between the two.
“They are not lies. They are baseless. Not important for conversation,” he said.
He further accused the anchor of amplifying opposition narratives while ignoring comparable issues involving opposition figures.
“I’m trying my best not to be aggressive about it, but you’re riding on the opposition’s back horse,” Bwala said, pointing to Labour Party leader Peter Obi as an example. “Peter Obi has since changed parties four times. How many times have you asked their people?”
Bwala maintained that revisiting his past criticism of Tinubu served no useful purpose, calling instead for sharper focus on government policies and the challenges directly affecting citizens.
