Broadcaster Daddy Freeze has criticised gospel artiste Mercy Chinwo’s performance at the service of songs held for late actor Alex Ekubo, saying it was inappropriate for the solemn occasion.
Ekubo died on May 11, 2026, at age 40, after a private battle with metastatic kidney cancer, his family confirmed.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Daddy Freeze said Chinwo’s set turned the memorial into what felt like a concert rather than a reflective tribute. He argued that her choice of upbeat songs clashed with the mood such an event demands, insisting that funerals call for soft, calming music instead of high-energy performances.
He also questioned the decision to bring in multiple guest artistes to lead worship at the event, saying traditional memorial services are better suited to hymns that preserve a peaceful and respectful tone.
According to him, “Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place to concert, at that point I got up and left. And here is my question: you are saying Daddy Freeze disobeyed the dress code — does Mercy Chinwo not have soft music? Do you understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have sung hymns. I would have been more moved if I had heard hymns.”
